Stop with the finger pointing and find the bug. User error it
wasn't. I just did a apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade, and ta-da,
no more vim. dselect showed the old version of vim still installed,
but the files weren't there. apt DOES remove files (that's 1/3 of its
job: install, remove, upgrade) and vim DOES have postint and postrm
(whatever they are called) scripts, so can one of you please find and
fix this?
