Package: apt Version: 0.5.5.1 Severity: normal Some FTP servers may be configured to allow a particular user (typicaly "anonymous") to login without sending any password, instead of using a bogus one such as the email address.
After sending the "USER" command, they will respond with "230", indicating the login is succesful. The problem is that APT will then attempt to send a password, and recieve an error from server. This is what happens with, for example, alpha.gnu.org: < 220 GNU alpha FTP server ready. > USER anonymous < 230 Login successful. Have fun. > PASS [EMAIL PROTECTED] < 500 Unknown command.
