It works here, with the same libc6. What's more, 0.5.14 did not change any code except which is used by commands other that "apt-get build-dep". Perhaps your filesystem became corrupted or something like that? Try reinstalling apt and perhaps other packages you upgraded at the same time. -- - mdz
