I am working on porting xfree 4.3 to (pure) amd64, and I get the exact same bug when installing xlibs. Note that I haven't touch a single line of xlibs's control config. Xlibs also have a huge list of conffiiles but it works on i386 ... removing xlibs makes apt-get working again. maybe it's memory related ...
