There was some reason for it.. Probably along the lines of it being poorly documented/too complicated/missing some API/overkill for what was needed. I don't recall exactly. Worrying about the db files is really only important for ftp-master.d.o, because it has about 3.4G worth of db files.. Donno if you have this already, but I put a smaller one of the .db files from ftp-master at: http://gluck.debian.org/~jgg/packages-debian-installer-hurd-i386.db I guess worse comes to worse it will just require spending some vast amount of time to regen them..
