Dear Matt,
I removed testing from sources.list and changed my preferences file
(removed
comments) after error now detected and can now use dselect and apt-cache
without MMap error. cdrom was asked for in dselect but not read.

Feel a fool for not trying these before but he errors I've been having
were
not decipharable till tried changes after re re-reading and fixing
sources.list and apt.conf. though no one on mail list could advise me
