There's really no need to be afraid of SQL. Frankly, I can't think of a
reason to avoid it, because once you get the hang of it, it's not that
complicated at all. For learning, MS Access is good, because it's easy to
use and requiers virtually no configuring on your part. But remember, it's a
desktop application with all the drawbacks of desktop apps vs. multi-tier
apps.
For multi-tier you could think of Firebird (free, open src), or MS SQL
Server (handy, if you start with MS Access, because you can easily scale
up), or of course any of a host of SQL oriented databases.
