Just a thought - Perhaps you can use something like SAX (Simple Api for 
XML), see for example:

http://home.iprimus.com.au/kbwood/DelphiXML/BookCode/#Part3
http://xml.defined.net/SAX/

etc.

It doesn't work quite the way you want (ie uses events), but it also doesn't 
read the entire file into a dom-like structure, ie it parses bit by bit, so 
it's efficient, thus it might suffice.
