That regedit competent user only has to know about a crack site where the modified exe is posted.
I agree that the level of protection can get absurd and the dedicated hacker will get your exe cracked no matter what. However, the previous poster had expended a lot of effort on a method that would be easily hacked with a standard tool in the hackers arsenal. It's better not to make it so easy for them. The best protection in my mind is to use packages and supply a certain package as demo version only. When they buy the product, they get the real package. Most hackers are too cheap to buy the product just to hack it. With the finished product, use a registration scheme like those mentioned so they can't give it away to friends so easily either.
