don't get too liberal in sprinkling "application.processmessages" thoughout
your code though.  sometimes that causes problems because it can mess up the
natural order of message handling.  When this happens you can get strange
errors that might be hard to track down.

If you need to repaint a form, call refresh (or repaint).  If you need to
make your app more responsive to users, it's best to use a thread for that.
