You're missing the point. Bar-code scanners are just special interfaces 
to a keyboard. When a scanner scans something, all it does is send the 
equivalent keyboard codes, as though someone had typed the numbers into 
a regular keyboard.

Therefore, your program doesn't need to know anything about bar-code 
scanners. All your program has to do is accept keyboard input. Whether 
the input comes from a real keyboard or from a bar-code scanner 
shouldn't be important, particularly because your program won't be able 
to tell the difference anyway. Keyboard input all looks the same, no 
matter what hardware it comes from.

Bar codes are just sequences of numbers. That's what allows the checker 
at the supermarket to type in the codes on the keyboard when the laser 
scanner can't read the bar code.
