Dr. Bob is correct (as if there was any doubt) Delphi 2006 (formerly
Dexter) was announced on Oct. 10, 2005.

Now for my 2 cents, I currently use Delphi 5 & Delphi 2005, I would
use D2005 for everything if I could. Since the third update D2005 has
been very reasonable for me to work with, from my understanding D2006
will be much better.

We have a large monolithic system developed in D5, I have started the
port (to D2005), but it uses components that have been orphaned so,
it's taking a lot of time I simply don't have. I use Delphi 2005 for
any project that doesn't require code already tied to D5.

My co-worker felt D5 was all you could ever need, until I started
showing him the enhancements that have been made since then,
especially in D2005. Many of them are not big banner features, because
D5 did have all the base functionality to be extremely useful. But,
the Delphi team didn't sit & wait for new mavor fuctionality to be
required. Much of the work they did was centered around small
functions which make the programmer's life easier, they have a good
handle on what can accomplish this because they too use Delphi every day.

Programmers who have moved along with Delphi often don't recognize how
handy code complete & code insight are in D2005. Programmer's who have
never moved beyond D5 don't realize how clunky the code complete &
code insight are in D5. Switching back and forth I feel it, I often
curse D5, because code complete doesn't do something it would in D2005
(or even D7).

So, I'd recommend the newest you can get D2006 if you can afford to
pre-order & wait until probably Dec. or Jan. for delivery. D2005 if
you can't. The roadmap looks like there will be 2 major updates this
year. D2006 & the .Net 2.0 release, which I'm sure will have
additional Win32 features as well. So, D2005 with a software assurance
contract would get you all three versions as they become available. I
realize this is not cheap & therefore not a feasible option for many
developers.

I hope this helps you plan.

Good luck,

Roger C. Morgan II
