Two excellent configuration management applications
are Star Team, from Borland, and Team Coherence, from
QSC (www.qsc.co.uk). Both have been employed on
projects on which I've worked, and both are far
superior in stability, ease of use and features, IMHO,
to VSS, which I've also used. Star team is more
feature-rich, and Team Coherence lower priced, but I'm
pelased with both.
Use SOME version contol system, though; I've seen a
lot of hair-pulling when home-rolled versioning failed
(e.g. zipping old files, or sytem backups that
couldn't be restored).
