I have no intention of doing anything behind anyone's back.
The need for it will be fully explained. I then want to provide
a button so that the user can make this change easily
without leaving the application or having to follow detailed
instructions.
On exit the app will remind the user that they changed the
setting and offer to change it back for them.

I'm already doing that. It's not straightforward because the
dialogs vary with different versions of Windows and different
graphics cards. I want to make it more user-friendly.
Martin.
