Hi You are looking to perform optical character recognition (OCR). Unless you want to involve yourself with the process of actually recognising characters, I would take the standard approach of looking for a component that performs OCR for you. One that I know of is by a company called MCM Design (http://www.mcm-design.com/index.php) but I am sure there are others.
