are you trapping the error with something like the following so the app. can
recover gracefully?

Nothing, unless you use a clientdataset.
When commucation Link occurs, usually every operation we
do to the dataset
will result an error, if we try closing the database
component. It will try closing every opened dataset
connected to it and resulting another error.
