We have written a lot of software to do various things with other MS Office apps, mostly Excel, but Word as well. We have found that OLE Automation is the best solution when working with these proprietary file formats. Microsoft's support of OLE Automation, so far, has been pretty much backward and forwardly compatible. This means you can write software that works with current office documents and pretty much expect they will also work in the future. OLE Automation should allow you to do just about anything you would be able to do if you had full documentation on the file format, but just easier since it is object-like.
