Well, at the risk of opening a can of worms here: Maybe you could afford it by
selling your current copy of D5 ;-).

At the risk of opening a can of worms, I find that most of my programming
requirements can be fulfilled with my copy of D5 Pro. After D6, it seems, we
got locked into the DotNet fairytale of universal design/deployment. I am in
the market for a newer version of Delphi, but I can't afford the latest version
and am not convinced it would be money well spent if I did buy it.

I suppose I will have to upgrade when 64bit apps become the norm....;-/

OK. I just verified this by installing on another computer. It doesn't even
contact Borland, and loads up no probs., so they are out of the loop. I guess
D6 started going with that "XP" licensing model... I don'[t need D5 to install
D6, so I'd be surprised if it's an upgrade but I've sent over a query to tech.
support, just in case they monitor E-bay sales too.

6-900$ for old copies of D5 and D6! So I'm not the only one who thinks
things went downhill after D6 eh?

With the fact that Embarcadero bought the product and is no longer
supporting the older versions, there is less concern about licensing. Delphi 5
is so old, that if you have the original license, you should be fine. I still
use version 5 and with the license number that came on the CD, I installed my
copy with no problems.

The way I understood it, you buy into the Delphi software by paying the full
price at some point. Then you purchase upgrades which allow you to use the
latest version, but you still can use the older versions. You just can't sell
the older versions and still use the latest version at the same time. That
violates the idea that you only have one "license" to use Delphi.

Yes, I was rather astonished at the prices people were asking.

On licensing, you pose an interesting dilemma my friend.

Let me ask you this: if that were the case, would I need to have D5
installed to install D6? I never needed D5 again after purchasing D6 - I can't
remember if it's an upgrade...

With D6, I know it had to contact Borland and ask them to bump up the
license count because it wouldn't install, but I don't remember if that's the
case w/ D5. If so, would they even be handing out license counts anymore for
software this old, now that they've been bought up several times?

Put it up for auction on EBay. I have been monitoring sales of old

Delphi software and they are fetching good prices these days.

Having said that, did you upgrade to another version of Delphi? If so,

theoretically your older version does not have a license...:-( I always

hated that copyright restriction.

But if you do not have any versions of Delphi in use and you want to

sell Delphi 5 then you are free and clear.

Anyone interested in these? Embarcadero says D5 "street price" value is

around 250$, not sure about Kylix...
