Before I drop off the net for the next couple of days while I move,
I wanted to report something about Delphi 2005 and the 3rd patch.
I had said earlier that it had little or no effect on my setup and
that I was sorely disappointed with the slowness of the IDE overall. Well,
I had been having a problem with WinXP Pro SP 2 for awhile in that I wasn't
able to shutdown or restart the OS as it would stick at the "Shutting down
Windows screen". Along with that I wasn't able to restore to an earlier
config because of the shutdown problem, AND updating wouldn't work either,
freezing up in IExplorer. I tried all the suggested fixes and utilities but
nothing worked. Then finally in trying to solve the problem I messed
something else up and could no longer connect to anything on the net!
First I tried repairing but that did nothing, so I then reformatted
and re-installed everything from scratch. Everything was working fine until
last night and suddenly I'm again having the same shutdown/restart problems
and the same Update freeze!
When in Safe mode it works fine so I am assuming it must be a driver
issue but I can't figure out which one! I updated all those I was able to
but still no luck, and I know that if I have to keep shutting the system
down manually it's going to screw something up even worse, so any
suggestions would be appreciated!
In any case, I had installed service pack 3 for Delphi 2005 during
this problem and before I reformatted, and as it turns out it simply didn't
take because after installing it on a fresh copy of Delphi the IDE is
running very well for the first time! It's still slower than D7 but no so
bad that it makes you crazy the way it was! And I'm loading it in it's
entirety...not just the Win32 personality as I was doing before! So
contrary to what I said before, I'm quite pleased with the changes they made
and I'm sure now that coding in Delphi will again become much more
enjoyable!
