Windows Vista's beta 1 announcement finally got to my ears and I've done some reading on Microsoft's web page about what this new thingy will bring to me as a developer. The two most important things that will affect me as a developer will be WinFX and Avalon. The way I understand things WinFX is actually a cool name for .Net while Avalon is a totally new thing for the GUI... that will only work on Vista and up!
Now I haven't seen much of Vista but I'm curious: will the "Vista look" be available for applications written using classic Win32 API using Delphi7 or will we be forced to use Avalon to provide this "look"? This is actually a very important question for me because I know for sure that as soon as Vista starts hitting my client's desktop's they will want the "Vista look", whatever that is! And if I'm forced to use Avalon to provide that I'll have to huge problems: (1) I'll be faced with a huge "porting" job because I've got a lot of custom VCL code in my applications. (2) Avalon will only be available in Vista and up! No support for older operating systems, no support for XP! So I'll essentially need to do some kind of dual presentation layer, one for 9x & XP, one for Vista! And then there's the final issue: will Borland provide quality support for Avalon in the IDE's designer? Will they be able to use the same designer with a different output? Googling for this provided two interesting links: the one from Borland is dated, the other one is not Borland but is more informative. http://blogs.borland.com/abauer/archive/2003/10/31/274.aspx http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.developer.winfx.avalon/browse_thread/thread/865d0deca8cc510a/8bceaa2e925795ba?rnum=3&hl=en&fwc=1 __________________________________________________ Delphi-Talk mailing list -> [email protected] http://www.elists.org/mailman/listinfo/delphi-talk
