Well I used the tools at my disposal, and I didn't want to get into
something like MySQL or Microsoft's SQL server...too much time and effort
involved just to do a few tests. But essentially they all work alike with
only slight differences in how you go about setting up the connection and
writing the connection string...in code or via a wizard. And I did do one
in ADO using VistaDB and as I said, it's not all that difficult or any
different that it's supposed to be with Nexus, ( except I could get the
Nexus ADO provider working ), but requiring the use of additional components
and code. Not a lot but more than DDA.
Out of all the dB's I looked at only Vista offers DDA that I was
able to try and could actually afford, and to me, especially for embedded
applications, I consider that to be important. Also, nearly all the
different dB's who provide ADO connections work in basically the same way.
It's a "disconnected" method of access requiring SQL. And though SQL is
probably great when you need to allow administrative queries and such, I
don't see the need for that extra layer when SQL is not necessary for any
reason other than to code it! That's one of the things that make Delphi so
good for dB apps...being able to access the table cursors directly.
Tonight I am working on building a component to take the place of a
Delphi DataModule in NET as they don't have anything like that. I'm going
to do it using VistaDB and DDA. And if I have time, because I was kinda
forced to take a small contract for a business friend and it requires a
local server, I will try putting one together in ADO if that would help.
But like I said I'm not going to fool around with those other big dB's as
I'd never have need for them anyway, and I'm having a hard enough time just
getting my head wrapped around NET itself!
In any case probably the best thing you could do as I'm just
learning this stuff now myself, is go to the Chrome Website and check out
the various demos they have for ADO and ASP.

Peersonally, Robert, I think this would have served us all better if
you'd created an ADO application with the SQL Server Northwind DB on all
platforms involved and left out the specialized access tools. This would
have
given us a better feel of hwo the three stacked up.
Woul dit be possible for you to go through and redo this using only the ADo
and
ADO.Net access methods? I'm interested in seeing if VS/Chrome is as easy to
put together an ADO.Net app as a Delphi Win32 ADO app.
