I may be repeating myself here and if I am I'm sorry, however I'm so
amazed at the recovery from problems I was experiencing with my eyes using
standard computer monitors now that I am using an Ultra Flat Panel instead
that I want to be sure others are aware of the great differences their use
can make in your life!
My eyes had been pretty good, even up to the age of 40, having to
wear glasses with a slight prescription for my left eye only due to it being
slightly lazy thus not as much used for reading or other close work. By 40
I had noticed some changes in both eyes however, which I was assured were
simply due to age, and which required again only slight correction for fine,
close, work.
I'm in front of my computer about an average of 8 to 14 hours a day,
7 days a week, and before I was 40 I worked all day in front of the older
green screens that Wang and IBM systems used everywhere.
By the time I hit 45 my right eye, which as I said I've always
relied upon as my primary eye for reading and even driving, had begun to
give me more problems. It would get a little blurry every once in awhile,
and driving at night was getting a bit uncomfortable, especially when
raining, as lights had a tendency to glare more and spread out across the
windshield. Again my glasses were adjusted, made stronger, and it was
suggested a bifocal lens be added for computer work and reading.
Things kept getting worse and about three years ago I would
sometimes wake up and not be able to see what was written in front of me
on-screen clearly for a couple of hours! I was using my left eye to read by
on these days, and driving even in the daylight, road signs were getting
tougher to make out! I was also experiencing a certain level of
discomfort...kind of like eye-strain I guess after only one or two hours of
work each day.
Finally the ophthalmologist set me up with a separate set of glasses
for when I was working on the computer. I didn't notice any real difference
even though the prescriptions were indeed different. And I was diagnosed
with chronic dry eye and began using an over the counter eye solution 4 to 6
times a day just so I could continue working! Taking breaks didn't help,
and it was starting to become a very serious problem!
Although I'd seen them, I'd never actually worked on a system using
a flat screen led type monitor except for the laptop I owned, and I never
really used it for any long enough stretch to notice any difference, so the
idea of getting rid of my current monitor and spending the amount of money
necessary for a good flat screen was never a serious consideration of mine.
But then the theft over Thanksgiving and I had to replace
everything. Dell had a great deal going on with their XPS systems, and a
real good discount on their larger, high-quality flat screens right at the
time I needed to buy so I figured I'd give it a try.
As I'm sure I mentioned before, it took only two days of working
with this monitor to show me that there was indeed a big difference in the
ways your eyes react to them compared to the tube-types I was used to, but
now and not even two months later I'm happy to be able to say that I back
down to the same eyeglass prescription I was using when I was 40..I'll be 51
in March... the dry eye problems are completely gone, and I no longer have
any blurriness or discomfort in either eye like I used to!
I'm not recounting this for any reason but to share something I'm
sure others may benefit from knowing and may not be aware of. I think it's
amazing, and I'm planning on buying these for both my daughters just as soon
as I'm able to. It must have done something to my ears as well because I
can almost hear my grandmother telling me the same way she used to, "Get off
the floor, honey. You're too close to the TV and you'll go blind if you
don't learn to sit on the couch with Pappy!" What she didn't know was that
I wasn't watching Mitch Miller with my grandfather. I was down there
playing with the cat!
