I'm not saying this is the case with Inprise, er...I mean Borland, but one of the oldest ploys in business, used primarily as a way of keeping both stockholders and customers from jumping tracks, is to announce the great saving buyout or injection of new funding, and then after awhile when things have calmed down a bit, to announce the acceptance of a slightly less viable solution such as Inprise, er...I mean Borland has now. ( I don't know why I suddenly find myself confusing Borland with Inprise again! ). By the way, no matter what else "wholly-owned subsidiary" means legally, OR what the public expects it to mean, what it REALLY means is that in the end, where it always counts, nothing has changed! Of course there are obvious tax considerations to be had, but in the final analysis this usually means that the subsidiary company is either held as a write-off thus never getting the investment it requires, or it is nurtured as the cash cow they know it can be until it actually becomes self-sustaining, and then it is again written off. Either way the DevCo dream bites the dust!
