Have you got that OpenLaszlo link ? I was thinking about trying something 
like that myself, but if it's already been done, even better! 

I've been following OpenLaszlo for about a year now and they've recently 
tied up with Sun as well. Their LaszloMail application is beautiful and I 
would love to see them release code samples on how they did things like the 
splitter/toolbars and grid customisations in the application.
