Change SetActive() or OpenCursor() Instead.
Open just assigns True to Active.

You are correct. You cannot rebuild the standard VCL packages, but then you only need 
these for the Delphi design time environment or if you are doing distributions with 
packages. You can still build a modified version if required, but it should then be 
just compiled into your code and then you cannot use any packages that rely on the 
older class definition.

I'm wanting to override one of the methods in TDataSet (open).

But it was never declared virtual, easy enough, but when I attempt to
change it to a virtual method, it won't let me rebuid the package. I can't
find a package file (dpk ?) for the vcl stuff, so I can't rebuild them. Is
there any other way or modifying the standard VCL code
