* SERVICE PACK 6 BUG LIST
Well, the fun has started. This list is far from complete, but here
is a compilation of things people have sent me and reports in the
press. You'll have to excuse me that none of this has been tested
by me or confirmed, I'm just reporting on what I have been able to
find on such short notice.
- Inoculan and SP6 problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q244/6/52.ASP
- The SP6 readme URL
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/PREM_SP6/readme
.asp
- The KB articles which lists all of the SP6 fixes can be found at;
Part 1
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q241/2/11.ASP
Part 2
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q244/6/90.ASP
- MSNBC has a good list with an overview as well:
http://www.msnbc.com/news/330665.asp
- Windows NT Mag has a page with a good list too:
http://www.winntmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=7519
- SP6 128bit troubles so far.... DO NOT USE the ms "uptime" tool with
the /s or /a switches. It Dr. Watson's everytime. IE5 intermittently
crashes with multiple windows open. Lost all ODBC connections to SQL
for web enable DB. Had to re-create ODBC links. Multi-processor NTS
and NTW platform, very stable with SP5. I have experienced 7 BSOD's
in two days with SP6 on both. Thank GOD they are non-prod systems.
Im heading back to SP5.
- I tried to apply SP6 to my COMPAQ Proliant 6500 server and after
reboot - Oops! - bluescreen. There is an incompatibility between
Compaq NC31xx LAN cards and SP6 which causes BSOD immediately after
"press Ctrl-Alt-Del" logon screen is displayed. So, if you plan to
install SP6 on similar machine, be sure to check
%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\drivers\cpqntac.sys file version and
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp11501-12000\sp11718.txt file
(which contains "This SoftPaq also addresses a bluescreen error
that appears when NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 is installed", so at least
Compaq knows about the problem ;-)
- After installing SP6. I could not edit my web server pages using
FP98. It ask to login which I did as an administrator but it keeps
coming back as invalid login. I uninstall it and went back to SP5
no problem everything is back to normal.
- on a Dell Optiplex GXa, 266 MHz, with 128 MB RAM, I also had
serious problems with SP 6 ! Blue screens, SQL server didn't start
any more, IIS 4 sometimes refused and other strange vague problems.
So for the first time in 3 years, I had to UNINSTALL the service
pack and now, with SP 5, the system is stable again.
- Here is the deal on SP6 and Compaq machines.....also, there is
an issue with exchange server and SP6. In some cases, after applying
the service pack, Exchange will start re-indexing, taking up to an
hour or more to restart after the SP is applied. If this occurs it
is VITAL that you do not stop the machine, but let it re-index.....
otherwise serious information store loss could occur.
- SP6 also, seems to affect the 3com 3c905tx. I've tried installing
on 2 completely separate PC's both with this card and both were
unable to reach the network after the install. Uninstalling did not
seem to work, so I ended up having to reinstall NT. Maybe let others
know that Clones are also affected! Both machines were clones, one a
266 and the other a 400 both with 512mb of ram.
- I've detected some problems with the security event log. After
SP6 it is not logging all the security information. Any feedback on
that?
- I installed WindowsNT SP6 on my Dell OptiPlex and had no problems
UNTIL I tried to install new video drivers. The video drive was not
recognized and continued to default to standard vga. This problem
went away as soon as I uninstalled SP6 and returned to SP5. Then both
my old and new video drivers worked. By the way, these are drivers
for the 3D Rage Pro AGP 2x on the mother board.
- NT4 SP6 breaks RAS dial-up with Error 678?
- I use NetworkICE's product, BlackICE Defender (BID), on my NT 4.0
workstation. According to the BID message board, SP6 breaks some
or all BID's filtering capabilities. Since I'm sitting on SP5 myself,
I cannot confirm this, but you can go to:
http://209.31.36.222/
which is the BID message board and see some of the SP6 reports
yourself.
- Either in SP5 or SP6, Microsoft stopped checking entries in the
Domain Suffix Search Order (for DNS) beyond 3. SP4 would search 4
(and maybe more, I never tested), but SP6 most definitely limits
out at 3 entries. Further entries can be entered, but they appear
to be ignored.
In short, like they always used to say in Hill Street Blues:
"Let's be careful out there!"

Subject: [DUG]: WinNT SP6
Hi all !
Anyone experienced any problems with NT SP6 ?
Just wondering if its safe to deploy yet or will it be like the
other "even" numbered SPs ?
Cheers,
Leon
