Hi all,

Monday Lunchtime:

The conference proper started last night with a Keynote speech by Dale
Fuller, Interim CEO of Inprise, David Intersimone (VP Developer Relations),
and a few others. Dale re-emphasised the commitment to the developer
community, and the successes that the company had had over the last year.
Including the relationship with MS, and the new products that are either
out, or coming real soon now.

We also had a Product Address this morning prior to the main conference
sessions.

Some notable points:

1. Neat features with Delphi 5. RADical!!
2. JBuilder 3 -
3. JBuilder for Solaris - a complete rewrite that is fully written in Java.
This will be the basis for the JBuilder for Linux etc. Only thing holding
this up is the proving of the Java Virtual Machines (JVM) on each of the
platforms. It was extremely fast. Nic Wise was seen drooling over the
Solaris machine in the computer lab over the way.
4. JDatastor. A full Java implementation of an SQL compliant database.
Ideal for local data.
5. Unified Modelling Language (UML), Patterns and Interfaces. There is a
real emphasis on the use of these technologies and techniques in developing
applications and systems. If you haven't done anything in this direction,
take to the web right now. Start at Borland's community developer site
http://community.borland.com, or www.rational.com, or www.omg.org etc.
6. Interbase 6 looks hot. With replication and support for 64 bit integers,
and a feature called "dialects" which allows backward compatibility, things
should be easy to manage wehn you upgrade.
7. Borland signed a strategic alliance with Corel with respect to Corel
Linux!! Interesting. No details yet, but watch this space.

Titbits:

We met with Blake Stone, the head of the JBuilder team. A very cool guy.
Very focused and responsible for a number of really neat developments in
the JBuilder camp.

Delphi for Linux is real. They have the compiler running (read
demonstratable), and the IDE is next. The Pascal language HAS a future. It
was announced that this product will suport both the KDE and GNOME GUI
environments.

More tomorrow - I'm off for more technology food.

Kindest Regards

Gary
 in
   Sunny Brisbane.
