Hi all,

Sorry about the delay in this report, but we had such a good time Monday night at the
Conference Party, there was no time in the morning on Tuesday, and lunchtime was taken
up
with finding Steve's Son and Mother in Law who got lost in downtown Brisbane. And then
they shut the computer lab down and the internet link was gone.

Anyway I'm back on line and here's the latest news.

The conference continued in a very strong, developer focused way, and the unanimous
opinion to all I spoke to was that the event was a complete success, and very valuable
for
any developer seriously involved with current technology.

If you haven't got the hint by now, start planning to go next year. Start getting your
boss (if
you have one) used to the idea now. Get is written into your Employment Contract that
you
get to go to these conferences.

We had a total of 404 participants, 45 of whom were from NZ.

The sessions on design and planning were excellent. The use of tools help implement the
usef of UML (Unified Modelling Language) was emphasised by all speakers. Rational had a
stand, and the Aussies have their own product called Simply Objects, at much less cost.

At the closing session we had a demonstration of JBuilder running on LInux ( we also
saw it
running on Solaris previously), and when the Linux JVM for Linux is stable it will be
released
for sale.

We also got to see the beginning stages of Kylix - the Delphi-Pascal / C++ RAD
development
environment for Linux. We saw (YES actually right there in front of us!!) Delphi code
being
compiled in the Linux environment and running. So the compiler is running, and they
are now
working on the IDE.

I had a special treat, being invited to dinner with Charlie Calvert, David
Intersimone, and Danny
Thorpe. these are all Borland heavyweights, and got quite an insight into the
internal runnings
of how the tools evolve and are managed. These are incredible people, and their
insight,
inception, and abilities astounded me. That's why Delphi, C++ Builder, JBuilder and
the other
tools are streets ahead of the competition.

Ideas to follow:

Check out UML.

Look at using Interfaces.

Read up on Patterns.

Come to the next User Group meeting and find out more about what on earth the above
means! More details as they come to hand.

Me, I'm off for two days to recover. So much information to process, so much to digest
and
interpret.

Regards

Gary

PS: You should all be going next year - it's such a buzz.

PSS: We met the designer of CODERUSH, a guy called Mark Miller. Image Jim Carrey
crossed
with Wade Auchterlonie and that's about him. Brilliant, but wacky. He was there, gave
three
talks, and participated from the back benches is a lot of others. Check out Coderush at
www.eagle-software.com or something like that. CODERUSH is a Delphi add in that makes
coding much faster and a lot of other things.

PSSS: At the conference party no-one from NZ disgraced themselves. We were all well
behaved, and no-one got drunk, and reports of hoards of programmer swimming naked in
the
river are totally unfounded, and.... where do all those flying pigs come from!!!

PSSSS: Dale Fuller - Interim CEO of Inprise Borland got up at the party and played a
mean rock
guitar solo with the band - Creedence Clearwater revival number I believe. The
tradition of
Borland lives on.
