You are going to have to have the connection up for the full day (more like
12 hours at most places between the earlier starters & the late leavers) if
you are running a dumb terminal style application for everything.
The alternative is dial on demand which can work for some applications (like
e-mail), but for on-line ordering,you don't want to put a 30 second dial up
block every time the user hits the OK button...
Of course, I haven't even got started on what happens when you have 5 people
in the office all paging through applications - your 56K line starting
looking real skinny <g>

I tend to think that communications, especially fat pipes or mobile comms
are still expensive compared to the cost of hardware. Terminals made a lot
more sense when CPU's were expensive & a screenful of data was 80x25 chars
rather than 1024x768 supermodel wallpaper. Worst of all, Citrix would seem
to rule out Quake on a Friday night :-)
Why maintenance should be so expensive is a question best left to Microsoft
- after all every Linux box has telnet built in which makes remote
management alot easier... ;-)
