You can't represent binary data via XML, so that's likely to be the problem.
Of course you code uu[de|en]code the data, but that's up to you.

I've been mucking around with Tomcat (www.apache.org) and Cocoon (ditto) for
light entertainment, so you might want to check them out if you're looking
for examples.
