Depends on how simple you want :-) I once wrote a simple telnet daemon to
control WinAMP. You telnetted to its port and issued commands like
"STOP" "PLAY" "NEXT" "PREV". This just let me control what was playing
without walking to the other machine :P
I'm currently looking at GTK for X-Windows but thats on the way way back
burner :-)
