Let us not forget:
a) Those bloated event driven Windows 3.1 applications that are never
going to outperform dedicated DOS ones...
b) Those interpreted Visual Basic applications that will never be as
fast as native C++ ones...

Now Windows rules the world, and VB is the most popular development
language. Thus by this metric Java can only succeed...
