Mmmm. It would appear that the problem is not Windows/Delphi, but that I
have been trying to do the wrong thing! ;-)

There is definitely merit in what they are saying but before I succumb
completely to the brainwashing I thought I would return briefly to the
original question and check that no one has a solution for it (as opposed to
a work around). I was hoping that those of you who have written your own
component sets might have run into (and solved) this problem.

So, does anyone know how to "persuade" windows to draw disabled
controls/windows, particularly Edit windows, with black (not dark grey)
text?
