Alan
I am finally considering the move to enterprise after the demo! A mixture of
the WebSnap/DataSnap gives me a complete development platform (Fat clients
communicating via SOAP to a DataSnap based middle layer, RAD WEB Development
for the remote thin client), Though I have posed the following questions
1/ What parts of BixSnap/DataSnap/WebSnap will make it thru to Kylix (and in
what form)
2/ What do Borland mean by "Simple DataSnap deployment licensing" on
http://www.borland.com/delphi/del6/featurematrix/datasnap.html
3/ Price (Don't take the Website price at face value
http://www.borland.co.nz/retail/faxnz.html)
Hopefully if 2/ is resolved then D6 Ent provides an "up to the minute" 3
tier dev platform with a "free to distribute" middle tier (in the form of a
ISAPI/NSAPI/Apache DLL) add to that
1/ Cross Platform Dev
2/ Future portability to Win64 and dotNet
3/ Integration to EJB (albeit in a borland Proprietary manner. ie it only
works on AppServer)
I think a VB developer (facing another shafting in the form of VB7/VB.NET)
would be foolish not to consider jumping ship, Any Company outr there that
is launching a new VB based development must be run by fraidy cat IT staff
(no one got fired for buying M$)
I loved the ability to drag and drop controls into other parents!
As for little to for the desktop developer I was skeptical as to what D6
could offer, after all D4/D5 was pretty good, If WebSnap delivers
80% of what was demoed it "Delphiizes" Web Dev ie makes it a 'Snap' not a
Burden, therefore the development effort was well directed
Ffor those who can recall some of my previous scathing comments about doing
webdev in Delphi will realize this is a major opinion shift, hah
I'm a big boy I can change my mind! (caveat: If you were contemplating a
'large' scalable WebDev Java is still the tool, my target market is in the
1-20 user Segment
My main disappointments are to do with the basic structure of the Delphi
Class structure, Why have they not used interfaces more?
If they had implemented the new "Variant" via an interface definition it
would be more universally applicatable rather than simply being
another branch off the TObject Class tree
Unfortunately John Kaster had to run off to an interview which left no Q&A
Time (similar thing happened with David I's last visit) in future i think
they could leave at least an hour after a lauch for us to grill the Borland
"stars"
It may not show but I'm really excited
Night All
