Currently there are no differences between the on disk layout for IB6 and
Firebird. The current goal of the Firebird development team is to create a
better IB with as many bugs as possible fixed and with some extentions the
remain compatible with IB6.
The extentions are possible due to the fact that they are changes to the SQL
parsing and still produce BLR code that the IB6 engine can interpret. A more
serious forking is projected to start when the Firebird 1.0 release is made
and people start looking towards the future.
Borlands behaviour over the entire open sourcing of InterBase has been
somewhat curious to say the least, and the relationship between the open
source project and the Borland project is currntly somewhat strained. But
the open source is open, and can't be closed again, and development will
continue reguardless of Borlands wishes, and more in line with what those
doing the coding want.
Cheers, Max.
