Depends on what you want it for. You can generate a 'signature' based on things like hard disk id, but what if the drive gets changed? Theoretically the Ethernet address is unique too, but what if there's no ethernet card? The drawback of the signature scheme is that if hardware changes, the signature changes. I've heard that XP does something like this, but on laptops with 'smart' power management the signature could change dynamically and then the OS decides it needs to be re-registered (reported on slashdot). Signatures are good for uniquely identifying a PC in a dynamic system, but can have problems when used for licensing.
