It is allowed in windows to use '.' anywhere in file names and directory
names and the length of extension is not limited to 3 characters.  I would
find the last '/' in the string as a separator between the filename and
directory and the last '.' before the file extension.  I have a directory
named 'Prj_sys.xl5'.  Where does your list of strings come from?
