Some bright spark (me) just remembered we have a Citrix Portal that uses a Javaclient and needs nothing installed on the client machine (other than what it itself installs). we use it for others stuff, so it might be OK for this too.
So long as you have enough CPU grunt and bandwidth to support all the clients, it's a good option. At the least it'll defer the problem :)
