In the software industry we have no such clearly defined boundaries for our profession - we actually do not even have a "profession" - well not one that is recognised as such. At a recent NACCQ conference (National Advisory Committee on Computing Qualifications), there was a keynote speech on this topic, and the work being done by the NZ Computing Society to bring recognition of the "ICT profession" - including of course software. LaurieB, you may want to add something here. Like funeral directors, who need no formal qualifications, anyone can buy a copy of Delphi, VS, or whatever, and call themselves a software developer, software engineer, or software architect ( if they add a briefcase and suit ). There is no professional body to manage the "profession", and no recourse for aggrieved clients as there is for any of the recognised professions ( except the oldest of course!).
