A couple of points - I think PKZip is still shareware, although how many 
people pay for it I don't know, whereas 7zip is completely freeware.  Also, 
7zip compresses files to a smaller size at full compression.  It does take 
longer to zip and unzip large files when using the highest compression 
algorithm, though, but you can still select the same compression level that 
PKZip uses if speed is an issue.
Note for those of you who DLed 7zip a while ago: the latest versions of 7zip 
are noticeably quicker than those of a year ago or so.
