USB devices generally have unique interfaces and require specific drivers to access them. I've got a USB thermometer here which I wrote code to access via a DLL they provide.
Unfortunately it's nothing like RS232. You would need to find a device that meets your needs, or just purchase a USB to serial converter. Ross.
