But you can go to the menu at 

Tools --> Debugger Options --> Language Exceptions

And uncheck "Stop On Delphi Exceptions" to get a 'user' view of the
error or processing situation, allowing the exception handler you've
coded to do its job and either trap and handle the error, or raise it
and have it appear to the user.

Just a thought - the  " try ... except "  doesn't block error messages
