Many thanks to Cosmin, Sid and Robert for helpful replies to my query. Sid - that link to a discussion (and the links therein) are very useful, as is Robert's reference to the Jedi Library and Cosmin's comments.
Sounds like my suspicion that Windows will not directly overwrite the sectors was right and it also sounds as though guaranteed overwriting of the files is not going to be easy. Conclusion: I will continue with my plan as mentioned before to overwrite the files in a "naive" manner (perhaps comparing the WipeFile function in http://www.swissdelphicenter.ch/en/showcode.php?id=823 and the JEDI ShredFile function) which should at least prevent anyone from seeing the file unless they use disk recovery software. I'll try a few freeware disk recovery apps to see what I can recover (and I'll report back). I'll use some of the arguments made here (and on Sid's link) to raise the client's awareness of the issues. Reliable and friendly help, as always. Thanks.
