Depending on your needs Linode.org might be worth a look.  I've been using them 
for a few years and have had no downtime or problems.  They offer virtual host 
Linux-based servers only.

 

Main upsides - cheaper plans with large amounts of disk and traffic.  Backups 
are optional extra but no charge for restores.

Main downside - not located in NZ so slightly slower response (ping) from here 
(but upside if users not in NZ).  

 

To answer the original question, for hosting web and email I'd go for Linux 
unless you need Windows for web apps.
