The upgrade from D2006 -> D2007 is really easy because they are compatible at the binary level. I've managed to get all our ancillary products on Delphi XE, which I'm going to have a go at porting to XE2 shortly. I'm really keen to get our main product from D2007 -> XE2, but it has lots and lots of third party components.
I guess what I'm saying is that you should probably get off D2006 to at least D2007 (which should be a painless upgrade), beyond that you are likely to face challenges. The new IDEs are really stable, I very rarely crash XE. I have a component that I have to reinstall every time I restart the IDE, I should sort this out, but at this stage I've found that it's just easier not to close the IDE (I usually have to for windows updates/reboots but that is about it).
