My understanding was that the chief area that Interbase and Firebird had
diverged was in accessing and writing Blob’s – well at about V2 Firebird that
was true, the rest being the same.

Does BDE (still installed by D2007and I am sure I saw the installation option
for XE2 as well) still access Firebird fine? Its never been altered so I bet
they didn’t downgrade that one!

Last year I was using D2007 and current Firebird using IBQuery and standard
datasets with no issues.

Now that Oracle owns MySQL I heard some muttering that the best real open
source DB out there is now Firebird – not sure how well Oracle is treating
MySQL but going by how they are treating Dalbek (The version of Java Google
uses to develop for Android) I would be worried (ie Oracle is trying to sue the
pants off Google to get licence fees for Android. Would be like Embarcadero
suing the Free Pascal organisation (same language, different compiler)

At the risk of starting a heated discussion what are the current merits of
Interbase vs Firebird apart from cost

Thanks to all. This might be one of those "slap the forehead" times but the
errors I get whenever I try to connect to Firebird 2.5 I had been putting down
to the Pro restrictions but it may be that I have incorrectly set up FireBird.

Time to check things again tonight.
