I use D2007 for my stuff and XE2 at work. I much prefer XE2. Lots of
refinements, and kinks ironed out and ever more power features.

Thanks for the information Jolyon.

based on the fact that I'm still on 2007 and it is still running smoothly I
doublt I'd do yearly upgrades. the software i do most importantly just needs a
good reliable compiler and editor without all the bells and whistles :)

I think I'll wait a month or 2 and see how it goes. whats annoying is that I
seem to have lost my XE download.. lol... ironic that they insist you are
licencing the IP, rather than the DVD or download, yet they refuse to ensure
you can get another copy of the binaries to actually use your license... and
now I see that they charge $16 (no much) to allow you to download for a 2 year
period.. its kind of a joke IMO. you'd think good customer service means that
if you buy a license, they make sure the download is always available.. in this
day and age.. its not like its expensive for them to store it.

Echoing what other's have said, the release of XE3 is imminent. If you are
considering a purchase now, it is definitely worth waiting a few more weeks.
The "RAD Studio World Tour" comes to Auckland on August 28th where you will no
doubt find out more.

  http://forms.embarcadero.com/forms/AP12Q3NZRADLaunchEvent

Well, when I say "more" I should really say "something" since the amount of
information available about what we can expect in XE3 has been shockingly,
disappointingly and rather worryingly entirely absent so far.

More positively, it was mentioned that XE2 came with an entitlement to
certain previous versions, but not all. The versions were Delphi 7 and 2007
thru XE. Worth nothing however is that you do not automatically receive these
with your order, you have to explicitly and separately request them and do so
within a limited period of your XE2 purchase (6 months I think it was).

Also as others have confirmed, SA (Software Assurance, a.k.a Support and
Maintenance) is a 1 year agreement from the date of purchase, providing
entitlement to 3 support incidents and software upgrades in that 12 month
period.

The cost of SA is (or was) slightly more than 1/2 the price of an upgrade
(for a Professional license - the price obviously is different at Enterprise
and Architect level). If you are considering a Pro license and intend
upgrading every year/release and trust Embarcadero to release an upgrade within
your SA period then SA makes sense. If you anticipate upgrading only every
other year/release then SA makes less sense.

The formula is different for Enterprise/Architect, where SA is even more
advantageous I believe.

Above all else... Welcome back to the loop! :)

Thanks for that. I really haven't kept in the loop for a few years.

Yes it is a one year deal.

This might help you decide what might be best for you.

interesting.. is the support and maintenance valid for 1 year then?
meaning you will get the next upgrade cheap only if it comes within a 1 year
period?

Its always a hard call which version to move to. I'm perfectly happy
with the rad-studio 2007, but I just feel like it might be time to move forward
with the unicode compatibility issue
while I'm at the start of a new project.

Support and maintenance means you don't have to pay for the upgrade

Personally I'd wait for the next release, give the cycle of releases
and the roadshow email doing the rounds, a new release must be soon.

Also with XE2 they started given access to previous versions as well.
Not sure if that will continue with the next release (or if it started with
XE2).

Just curious how many people have bought XE2 and are happy with it?

I bought XE early last year and I have to be honest that I haven't
even tried to use it yet, so its almost $500USD down the drain. I had some 3rd
party stuff that wasn't playing ball with unicode and never found the time to
track it down.

I'm now looking to upgrade XE2 and start fresh and hope I can make
it all work for a new project.

One major question I have is the Support and Maintenence option for
$270USD. Has anyone ever bought it, and have you ever found use for it? it
seems to me that they release "upgrades" that you have to pay for so often that
support and maintenance is almost a Do-Nothing service. If i'm
wrong I'd like to hear what people have to say.
