[DUG] n-tier Architecture

Morning all.   I have a client who currently has an application written in Delphi which I look after. The db is paradox and is getting a bit large for this. I am looking at upsizing to an SQL server.   I am looking at an n-tier approach, probably 3 tier and would like to keep the DB Layer independent of DBMS. I would have to upgrade to Delphi Enterprise to use MIDAS, is there any other (cheaper) options that other people have used?   The other option I have considered would be to use an OO persistence layer to persist the data to whatever DBMS, but haven’t done this before, so I am guessing there would be a learning curve.   Advice?   TIA
