I think Max actually meant to write Borland did not do things their way
withOUT a very good reason.

Or maybe he meant Borland did not do things THAT way with a very good reason
(although this makes slightly less sense to me gramatically).

Mmmm, maybe we should ask Max what he meant to write? ;-)
