Well, given that ECO II supports existing database schemas (it has an O/R mapping mechanism now), pretty much ANYONE who wants to do ORM would want to use it. Given that I simply would not write an application that used any other mechanism for 95% of the application (it is simply too tedious), ECO II seems like a good bet. The fact that you can override ECO and drop into SQL for those situations where you need to control the SQL is great. You can control pretty much every facet of ECO II now, which is much more flexible than Bold or ECO I was. There are other O/R mapping products out there, but ECO II beats them all hands down - I went to a .NET seminar showing a review of the state of play in .NET about 4 months ago and they all are pitiful in comparison.

ORM doesn't suit everyone, clearly that is the case, but if you are doing business applications - even if you are maintaining an existing application by writing new modules, ECO II has a huge amount of offer in terms of productivity and maintainability in code. The only thing it doesn't handle very well is the situation where people use stored procedures to read and write from their databases, and even then, you can get around that if you are determined (but it may not be worth the effort).

Subject: RE: [DUG] Special offer for D2005 Architect upgrade

Can anyone explain (in plain English preferably) why anyone would need/want the Architect version of Delphi 2005 instead of the Enterprise version?

From what I can see the only extra functionality is ECO II. Is this correct or are there older Delphi 7 Architect features which aren’t in the Delphi 2005 Enterprise version? And what would ECO II <really> be used for?

Thanks in advance,

David.

Subject: [DUG] Special offer for D2005 Architect upgrade

Hi everyone,

There is a special offer on at the moment, we accidently shipped 25 copies of D2005 Architect to a customer (wrong version) and rather than send them back to Singapore, they are being offered here for $2500 each (instead of the normal $3500) - so if you were thinking of upgrading your D2005 to Enterprise or Architect, now is a good time. They have been able to keep the offer open until the end of next week.

If you are interested, phone either 04-9136060 or 09-3600231 and ask to speak to Shane Varcoe. Or email him on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Oh, and patch #2 is out! If you didn't already know.

Richard
